Back in 2004, before I started my own business, I worked for an import firm as an office assistant. My job was to handle customer services and ensure orders were executed to the client’s demands.
My salary then was just US$100 a month, and my family depended on my wages to live from one month to the next. I knew that if we were to thrive, I would need to do better. I wanted to try and start my own company. Unfortunately, I didn’t even have enough money to register a company name.
I started searching online for business opportunities, and that’s when I found Alibaba.com. The firm I worked for imported machinery to garment factories in and around Pakistan, so I had a little experience with the import and export business. In addition, a friend of mine worked in the shoe manufacturing business, so I decided to take a few of his products and put them online.
Within a couple of weeks I started getting inquiries. I clearly remember my first order was from a buyer from Germany. He had asked for samples, and sent along an advance payment of US$200. Twice my monthly salary! I was ecstatic beyond belief. With the $200, I was able to register my business, pay my friend for the materials as well as enroll myself in an import/export business course. From then on, I knew there was potential in Alibaba.com to make me successful.
Business was hard at first because most buyers preferred to deal with authenticated and verified members only. At the time, I was still only making $100 a month, so I didn’t have the money to invest in a TrustPass membership. I took to the forums, hoping to find out how I could get buyers to trust me even though I was only a Free Member. One person suggested that I get references from my past buyers, and that’s what I did.
