International trading for us was very different than what it is today. Four years ago, all of our international business came through traders or buying houses. We never had any contact with the actual buyers, and we never knew the final price of our goods.

The set up is obviously unfair now. But back then, we thought that finding international buyers was hard, so we left it to the professionals. We dealt mostly with the domestic market anyway, so we were happy with the extra profit that these traders brought in. Then Alibaba.com changed everything.

Once we signed on as a Free Member on Alibaba.com, our eyes were opened to infinite possibilities. Suddenly the whole world was at our fingertips! All we needed to do was display our products online, and buyers that liked our products would send us inquiries. Finding international buyers, it turns out, was not very hard at all.

We started talking with buyers from all over the world via messages as well as TradeManager. I remember the first time we used the webcam function. I stayed at the office until very late at night, hoping to chat with a buyer from the US. When he finally came online, I started the video chat function. Even though my connection was not very good, it was the first time I have ever spoken to a buyer face-to-face. No deal or contract came out of that conversation, but I knew from that moment on that our company was fully capable of conducting our own international trading.

A short awhile the webcam incident, my company signed on to become an authenticated and verified TrustPass member. Once we did, we started receiving a lot more serious inquiries. Buyers often asked us about our product quality and pricing, so we started updating our products with all that information as well. A short while later we landed our first order through Alibaba.com, the first of many orders.

Today, we still do business with traders and buying houses, though the prices we get now are much better than before. Given the chance, we prefer to do business directly with buyers if we can. That way, we can pass huge savings on to our customers.
